DeBartolo's too-cute feature debut is an attempt at an intellectual love story that doesn't get beyond sitcom notions of romantic conflict. Frankie (Skye) is a caffeine-addicted waitress holding out not just for Mr. Right, but for Mr. Perfect. Best friend Allison (Aniston) is Frankie's sounding board for intellectual musings on life and love that sound a lot more like whining. When a new café employee named David (Astin) turns out to be Mr. Intellectual-Artistic-Type, Skye's knees get weak – and judging from the drippy dialogue, her brain turns to mush. With shallow development of Skye's and David's supposedly cosmic connection, and a trite subplot about a gay friend's (Landes) coming-out, Dream for an Insomniac is hardly an eye-opener about modern-day love. It's all been done before on Friends.
