A burly actor often cast as a tough guy or villain, he began appearing in movies in the late 1970s. His film credits include Semi-Tough (1977), Silverado (1985), F/X (1986), Presumed Innocent (1990), and Romeo and Juliet (1996). He has also appeared in numerous made-for-TV movies and starred as a psychiatrist in his own TV series Birdland (1994). He has also enjoyed a successful stage career. He won a Tony Award for his portrayal of Willy Loman in the 1998 production of Death of a Salesman.
