A versatile character actress, she won a Tony in 1970 for her performance in Butterflies Are Free, and she has appeared in a number of movies, most notably Woody Allen's Another Woman (1988) and Husbands and Wives (1992) She appeared in the comedy Meet the Parents (2000) and in the sequel Meet the Fockers (2004). In Sylvia (2003), she played the mother to her real-life daughter Gwyneth Paltrow's Sylvia Plath. She has also starred in several made-for-TV movies, including 1984's Helen Keller: The Miracle Continues, in which she played Annie Sullivan.
