A director of TV series including Ben Casey (1961) and The
Alfred Hitchcock Hour (1962), Pollack has risen to distinction as a
film director and producer. He has directed memorable films such as
They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969; nominated for an Oscar for best director),
Jeremiah Johnson (1972), The Way We Were (1973),
Tootsie (1982, which he also produced and acted in, earning another
Oscar nomination as best director), Out of Africa (1985, which he
also produced; it won an Oscar as best picture), and Sense and
Sensibility (1995, executive producer). Other features as producer
include Sabrina (1995), Random Hearts (1999) and The
Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). Pollack's brother Bernie is an actor.
