Doc Cheatham

(Adolphus Anthony Cheatham)
Born: 6/13/1905
Birthplace: Nashville, Tennessee

Having played early on in Vaudeville theaters backing blues/jazz great Bessie Smith and others, he later recorded with Ma Rainey and Billie Holiday, and, during the 1950s, he alternated playing with Dixieland and Latin bands. He did not become an important solo artist until the mid-'70s, but he recorded prolifically from then until his death.
