Robert Lewis actor, director, acting teacher Born: 3/16/1909 Birthplace: Brooklyn, New York
A founding member of the Group Theater (1931) and of the Actors Studio (1947), Lewis was a successful Broadway director (Brigadoon, 1947; On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, 1965) and acted in films such as Dragon Seed (1944) and The Ziegfeld Follies (1946). He was also a teacher of many outstanding actors, including Marlon Brando, Anne Bancroft, Meryl Streep, Sidney Lumet, Faye Dunaway, and Sigourney Weaver. In 1984 he published a memoir: Slings and Arrows: Theater in My Life. Died: 11/23/1997
