O'Toole has earned a string of 7 Oscar nominations and often plays visionary, otherworldly characters. Following an eminent career with the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-on-Avon, he gained immediate international renown for his role as T.E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia (1962). His other Oscar-nominated films are Becket (1964), The Lion in Winter (1968), Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969), The Ruling Class (1972), The Stunt Man (1980), and My Favorite Year (1982). Other films include The Last Emperor (1987). O'Toole published a memoir, Loitering with Intent, in 1992.
