James Mellow

biographer, art critic
Born: 2/28/1926
Birthplace: Gloucester, Massachusetts

An art critic for The New York Times, Mellow is best known as a biographer of prominent figures in literature. His works include Charmed Circle: Gertrude Stein & Company (1974), Nathaniel Hawthorne in His Times (1980), Invented Lives: F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald (1984), and Hemingway: A Life without Consequences (1992). He received a Guggenheim fellowship and, for the paperback edition of his work on Hawthorne, an American Book Award (1983).
