Severe looking actor who started on the stage in 1965 and appeared in The Edge of Night (1968) before his film debut in The Baby Maker (1970). Other films include Nashville (1975), Apocalypse Now (1979), and a turn as astronaut Alan Shepard in The Right Stuff (1983). His success carried over into the '90s, with roles including submarine captain Bart Mancuso in The Hunt for Red October (1990), Jodie Foster's FBI superior Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs (1991), and veteran firefighter John Adcox in Ron Howard's Backdraft (1991).
