An Australian actor who first gained fame in the critically acclaimed film Breaker Morant (1980), he also garnered leading roles in the PBS series A Town Like Alice (1980) and the TV miniseries The Thorn Birds (1983). His other films include F/X (1986), Cocktail (1988), Gorillas in the Mist (1988), F/X 2 (1991) and On the Beach (2000). He has been married to the actress Rachel Ward since 1983.
