Famous for his acerbic wit, he managed (1935–49) the Glyndebourne Opera and co-founded and directed (1947–49) the Edinburgh Festival before becoming general manager of New York's Metropolitan Opera (1950–72). He became a British citizen in 1946 and was knighted in 1971.
