Doctorow (Edgar Laurence Doctorow)novelist Born: 1/6/1931 Birthplace: New York City Author known for his historical fiction, such as the novels The Book of Daniel (1960), which was nominated for the National Book Award, and Ragtime (1975), which became a Broadway musical in 1998. Doctorow served as editor in chief at Dial Press, where he worked until 1969 with such writers as Norman Mailer and James Baldwin.
