Playing character roles in film and TV from the late 1960's, he gained attention as the vigilante title character in Joe (1970), as the cynical campaign manager in The Candidate (1972), and as the monster in Young Frankenstein (1974). He has appeared on the television shows NYPD Blue and won an Emmy for a guest appearance on The X-Files (1996). He starred in the hit series Everybody Loves Raymond (1996–2005). His other movies include The Brinks Job (1978), F.I.S.T. (1978), Red Heat (1988) and The Santa Clause (1994).
