A founding member of Chicago's influential Steppenwolf Theatre Company, he is an award-winning stage actor and director who conquered film and television in the 1990s, winning a Golden Globe for the title role in television's Truman (1995), an Emmy for the title role in George Wallace (1997), and landing an Oscar normination for his performance in Forest Gump (1994). He appeared in Kevin Spacey's directorial debut Albino Alligator (1996), and played opposite Mel Gibson in Ransom (1996), with Nicolas Cage in Snake Eyes (1998), with Ben Affleck in Reindeer Games (2000), Bruno (2000), and Impostor (2002).
