Based on the Nobel Prize-winning author Selma Lagerlof's novel, this lovely, sprawling film follows a pair of young lovers, Ingmar and Gertrud, living in a tiny, turn-of-the-century Swedish village. Their simple life is disrupted when Ingmar's sister becomes entranced with the words of an itinerant preacher.
