Acclaimed director noted for his rich character studies in films such as Tender Mercies (1982), Crimes of the Heart (1986), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), and Mister Johnson (1991). His other films include the historical dramas Breaker Morant (1980), for which he also wrote the Academy Award-nominated screenplay, and Double Jeopardy(1999).
