Veteran comedy actor known for his roles both on the stage and on the screen, he first appeared on Broadway in 1948 and made his film debut in The Kentuckian (1958). His greatest success on Broadway was in Neil Simon's The Odd Couple (1965); it was this achievement that really jump-started his film career. Some film credits include The Odd Couple (1967), Plaza Suite (1970), The Laughing Policeman (1973), The Sunshine Boys (1975) with George Burns, The Bad News Bears (1976), First Monday in October (1981), JFK (1991) and Grumpy Old Men (1993) with Jack Lemmon, a frequent partner in later films. Died: 6/1/2000
