With distinctly oversized nose and ample girth, this character actor had a long career in film and stage before achieving popular renown as the star of TV series Rumpole of the Bailey (1977–1992). His theatrical work began at London's Old Vic, and his notable film credits include The Mouse That Roared (1959), the Beatles' film Help! (1965), and A Man for All Seasons (1966).
