Starting off in silent films, she played opposite John Barrymore in Beau Brummel (1924) and Don Juan (1926). Some of her classic talkies include Red Dust (1932), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), and The Great Lie (1941), for which she won an Academy Award. Perhaps most famously she starred as Brigid O'Shaughnessy in The Maltese Falcon (1941).
