This appealing, versatile actress won an Academy Award for her role in Melvin and Howard (1980). She also appeared in Ragtime (1981), A Midsummer's Night Sex Comedy (1982), Parenthood (1989), Back to the Future III (1990), Philadelphia (1993), What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), About Sarah (1998), and Life as a House (2001). She played Joan's (Amber Tamblyn) mother in the television series Joan of Arcadia (2003–2005). She was previously married to actor Malcolm McDowell and currently to Ted Danson.
