With brother Bob, founded Miramax films in 1979, and their taste for intelligent, often demanding, cinema has brought the arthouse sensibility into the mainstream. They have consistently turned offbeat movies such as The Crying Game (1992) and Pulp Fiction (1994) into critical and commercial hits. Shakespeare in Love (1999) grabbed 7 Oscars in 1998, including Best Picture, and The Cider House Rules was nominated for Best Picture the following year. They are known as shrewd negotiators and command both respect and fear from other industry players.
