Film actor and country songwriter whose best-selling autobiography, To Hell and Back, helped launch his film career. He was the most decorated World War II veteran, a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor and was featured in a 1948 Life magazine cover story. He starred in nearly 30 films, which include The Red Badge of Courage (1951), To Hell and Back (1955), which was based on his book, and The Unforgiven (1960). Died: 5/28/1971
