20th Anniversary Collection — Various Artists

  • Blind Pig

This two-disc set comprised of tried-and-true chestnuts and previously unreleased tracks celebrates 20 years of blues and roots music from Blind Pig, a small but important Bay Area indie label. Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, Carey Bell, James Cotton, Luther Allison, Otis Rush, Johnny Shines, Charlie Musselwhite, John Lee Hooker and another two dozen or so artists represent the Blind Pig catalog, which ranges from mediocre to magnificent. Tracks from Debbie Davies, Joanna Connor, Sarah Brown and Deborah Coleman depict Blind Pig as an equal opportunity blues label. Along with Alligator and Black Top, Blind Pig did much to define blues in the postmodern period. The proof is in this tidy collection.
