This young Pennsylvania band shot to the bigtime on the strength of its six-times platinum sophomore effort, Throwing Copper. On this follow-up album, Live played to their strengths yet forged precious little new ground. With his penchant for mixing whispered subtlety with vocal cord-shredding wildness, charismatic lead singer and lyricist Edward Kowalczyk sounds better than ever here, tearing through the metalish lead single “Lakini's Juice,” and the ferocious “Rattlesnake,” before taking it down on the string-tinged ballad “Turn My Head.” But overall, the disc proves that Live is starting to sound dangerously formulaic when they should be branching out.
