Smilla's Sense of Snow
Fox Searchlight
The distant Ormond does a fine job of bringing the enigmatic mathematician Smilla Jaspersen to the big screen, but confusing editing leaves viewers, even those who read the novel, out in the cold. With her neighbor, the Mechanic (Byrne), who is as reserved and glum as she is, Smilla sets out to unravel the mysterious death of her 6-year-old neighbor, with whom she shared an uprooted childhood and a mixed heritage. The investigation leads the couple from Copenhagen to Greenland and unearths a conspiracy involving a corrupt businessman looking to exploit a century-old discovery.
