Mandela, nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar, is an “official” biopic, which means it's light on scandal and heavy on political history. This would be okay if the film went into more detail about white-ruled South Africa's transition to a multiracial system. Instead, it glosses over the mechanics of ending apartheid and downplays the struggles and missteps that made South Africa's evolution so human and inspiring.
