Contact Warner Bros. | Zemeckis brings Sagan's provocative novel to the screen in a manner that is, on the surface, characteristic of his more earth-bound Forrest Gump. Good and evil are sketched in broad, easily digestible strokes in this tale of a brilliant maverick radio astronomer Ellie Arroway (Foster) who makes contact with extraterrestrial life. The realization that we are not alone in the universe promises to have tremendous impact on the cosmogonies that have guided human civilization over the centuries, and Contact does not shy away from the ethical implications of science and the question of its compatibility with religion. In the end, there is no absolute answer. When Ellie returns from her 26-light-year odyssey to further examine her findings, she encounters a government unwilling to accept the validity of her experience. Forced to admit as a scientist that her encounter with aliens may have been a stress-induced hallucination, Ellie, nevertheless, cannot deny her singular experience.
