For a film about avenging a father's death, Underworld is curiously lacking sincerity and emotion. However, there is certainly no shortage of violence or references to Broadway musicals. Ex-con Johnny Crown (Leary) observes Father's Day by shooting everyone involved in his father's demise. Crown's boyhood buddy, a thug named Frank (Mantegna), who may or may not have been involved in the hit, pals around with Crown as he knocks off his victims.
