A clever script that introduces the Los Angeles pseudo-suave cocktail nation makes the film a departure from the already stale genre of Gen-X comedy. Stand-up comic Mike (Favreau) leaves his girlfriend behind in New York when he moves to LA to pursue his career. For about six months, he bores his friends and the women he tries to pick up with tales of his grief. Finally, his lounge-lizard buddies decide enough is enough and try to pump up his confidence and change his luck — both with women and his career. They take him to Vegas, where they lose money and offend plenty of women, and on a tour of the Los Angeles cocktail-music scene, where they continue to defy acceptable standards of dress and behavior.
