For a film with anarchists, spies and terrorists as its central characters, The Secret Agent is oddly apolitical. Politics is secondary to the loveless marriage of Winnie (Arquette) and Verloc (Hoskins), a loathsome Brit who holds anarchist meetings in his porn shop and then reports the proceedings to the police. Williams, in an unbilled role, is the one character to portray a sinister baseness lacking in the other characters.
