Based on the book and lyrics by Tim Rice

Parker slathers the Webber/Rice warhorse with a gauzy romanticism, and why not with pop goddess Madonna and Latin heartthrob Banderas breathing heavily in this two-hour plus music video? Madonna trained for months with a voice coach in preparation for this make-or-break role, and the work paid off. Her silky voice is mesmerizing. Her costumes deserve mention, too, if only for their sheer number. As with all transcriptions of Broadway extravaganzas, the film labors to replace the thrill of live spectacle with the wonder of sumptuous locations. It still adds up to a parade of overproduced music videos.
