Emmy Award-winning television and film actor known for his gentle, patriarchal television roles on the shows Father Knows Best (1954–60) and Marcus Welby, M.D. (1969–76). Father Knows Best was originally a radio show, and CBS transferred it to television in 1954. Though the show was well-received, it fared poorly in the ratings, and CBS canceled it. A write-in campaign convinced NBC to pick up the show, the first successful campaign of its kind. Died: 7/21/1998
