George Stevens

Birthplace: Oakland, California

Leading film director of the 1930s and 1940s known for movie standards such as Swing Time (1936), Gunga Din (1939), and Woman of the Year (1942). After his World War II service, Stevens returned to Tinseltown and made I Remember Mama (1948) and A Place in the Sun (1951), but his later work became grandiose and overblown.

Died: 3/8/1975
