Ernest Hemingway novelist Born: 7/21/1899 Birthplace: Oak Park, Illinois
Nobel Prize-winning novelist and short-story writer considered spokesman of the “lost generation.” His works, which include The Sun Also Rises (1926), A Farewell to Arms (1929) and For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), often told of people who courageously face the perils of living adventurous lives. In honor of his centennial, True at First Light, a “fictional memoir” and his last manuscript, was published in 1999. Died: 7/2/1961
