Nobel Prize-winning novelist and short-story writer considered spokesman of the “lost generation.” His works, which include The Sun Also Rises (1926), A Farewell to Arms (1929) and For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), often told of people who courageously face the perils of living adventurous lives.
