Merce Cunningham

avant-garde dancer, choreographer
Born: 4/16/1919
Birthplace: Centralia, Washington

Dancer and choreographer whose avant-garde dances focus on pure movement and chance. He has often collaborated with American artists, including Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella and the composer John Cage. Cunningham danced with Martha Graham (1940–55) and formed his own company in 1950. His dances include Suite by Chance (1952) and Locale (1980).
