Grammy Award-winning comedian, actor, author and musician best known for his intelligent, informal comic style. He was the first host (1954–56) and creator of The Tonight Show. His Steve Allen Show (1956–64) was a major influence on a generation of comedians and launched the careers of Tom Poston, Louis Nye and others. His films include The Benny Goodman Story (1955). Died: 10/30/2000
