The constantly shifting television season is difficult to track accurately because the networks adjust their schedules to find the most effective (profitable) show placements. Sweeps periods (usually in February, May, July and November) are particularly tumultuous, as programming executives schedule movies and miniseries and juggle their lineups to win viewers. Below are the shows that premiered during the 1997–1998 season. If a show moved from its debut to a different timeslot but later returned to its original time, only the debut time is given. If a show permanently changed positions, the beginning and final slots appear. Midseason replacements replace canceled shows, and tryouts debut midway through the spring season. Ratings determine if tryouts will return the following season.
