Kim Dae Jung,

president of South Korea, met with the North's president, Kim Jong Il, in Pyongyang in June. The summit marked the first meeting of the countries' leaders. The officials signed a hopeful, yet vague, agreement that outlined plans for unification and peace, reunions of separated families, open communication between the leaders, and a reciprocal visit to South Korea by Kim Jong Il. Kim won the Nobel Peace Prize in Oct.
