Dyes for diagnosing infectious diseases—Burckhalter and Seiwald synthesized fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), an antibody labeling agent. FITC has become widely used for rapid, accurate, and economic diagnosis of infectious diseases, including AIDS and syphilis. FITC and another agent are used together to quickly diagnose leukemia and lymphoma. (1995)
