Alan F. Shugart

Age: 76

engineer who helped develop the first disk drive in 1955 and continued to be at the forefront of computer storage development thereafter at IBM, Memorex, and his own Shugart Associates. In 1979, he cofounded Seagate Technology, the first company to make 5.25-inch hard disks.
