Jeane Kirkpatrick

Age: 80

first woman to be the American ambassador to the United Nations, and influential member of the National Security Council during President Reagan's first term of office. She was also sent to the U.N. for a diplomatic mission in 2003 by George W. Bush. A commentator at the forefront of the neoconservative movement, she switched her party affiliation from Democrat to Republican during the 1980s.
