influential director with an improvisational style who attacked authorities and conventions in—and during the production of—his films. He was best known for his 1970s films, including MASH, but continued to make critically acclaimed films for the rest of his life, including The Player (1992), Short Cuts (1993), and Gosford Park (2001).
