Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Congresswoman from California, was elected the first woman Speaker of the House in November, shortly after Democrats won control of the House in midterm elections. She suffered a blow, however, when Democrats selected Rep. Steny Hoyer as majority leader. She had thrown her support behind Rep. John Murtha, a former hawk who has been a vocal critic of the war in Iraq.
