saucy Texas politician who served as the Democratic governor of Texas from 1990 to 1994, when she narrowly lost the election to George W. Bush. Richards supported rights for minorities, gays, lesbians, and women. She gave the keynote address at the 1988 Democratic National Convention, delivering one of the most memorable lines of the presidential campaign when she said of George H. W. Bush, “He was born with a silver foot in his mouth.” Died: Austin, Texas, Sept. 13, 2006
