Charles Haughey

Irish politician who served as prime minister three times between 1979 and 1992. A populist leader whose bold actions helped revive the Irish economy, he was dogged by allegations of graft and tax evasion, having accepted—but not reported—millions of dollars in gifts and debt write-offs to support his lavish lifestyle.

Died: Kinsealy, Ireland, June 13, 2006
