Pramoedya Ananta Toer

Age: 81

leftist Indonesian novelist whose four novels, known collectively as the Buru Quartet, part of which he wrote while imprisoned, chronicle Indonesia's struggle for independence from Dutch colonists. He was detained in 1965 by the Suharto regime and held as a political prisoner for 14 years, then kept under house arrest until 1992.
