Jacob Zuma, former deputy president of South Africa, was acquitted of rape charges in May. Once a rising star in South African politics, Zuma—the former leader of the country's National AIDS Council—outraged women's rights and AIDS organizations during his trial when he said that showering after sex with an HIV-positive woman reduced the risk of contracting the virus. He also said his 31-year-old accuser, the daughter of a family friend, had indicated that she wanted to have sex with him when she sat with her legs uncrossed while wearing a skirt. Days after his acquittal, Zuma, 64, resumed his leadership position in the African National Congress.
