Stanislaw Lem Age: 84
Polish science-fiction writer whose philosophical works pondered the relationship between humans and machines. His books, which highlighted his sense of irony and sarcasm, include Solaris, which was adapted for film in 1972 and again in 2002, and Return from the Stars. His novels have been translated into 35 languages and sold 27 million copies. Died: Krakow, Poland, March 27, 2006
