Aleksandr Lukashenko, authoritarian president of Belarus, took 83% of the vote in March elections. The U.S. and other Western nations declared the election fraudulent and called for a new race. For the next several days, supporters of the opposition candidate Aleksandr Milinkevich, who won 6%, took to the streets of Minsk to protest the results. The police cracked down on the demonstrations and arrested dozens, including another presidential candidate, Aleksandr Kazulin. Information Please® Database, © 2007 Pearson Education, Inc.
