San Francisco Giants slugger, found himself once again at the center of the controversy over steroid use in March, with the release of Game of Shadows. The book attributes Bonds's phenomenal late-career hitting spree beginning in 2001 to performance-enhancing drugs. Bonds has said he had no idea that drugs given to him by his trainer were steroids. The scandal prompted Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig to launch an investigation into steroid use in baseball. In May, Bonds hit his 715th career home run, passing Babe Ruth's 714 and putting him in second place for the all-time record, behind Hank Aaron's 755.
